From Al's history (not my words):
THE SPANISH INVASION
In the year 1770, and again in 1772, Pedro Fages with Friar Crespi, as his secretary; some soldiers and a few Indians came up from Monterey along the eastern shores of San Francisco Bay. One of their camping sites was on the shores of our present Lake Merritt, near the site of the Lady of the Lourdes Church. A day later they camped on the Berkeley hills from where they obtained a view of the Golden Gate and the vastness of San Francisco Bay.
Each one of their trips was halted by the Straits of Carquinex for they found no way to cross over to what is now Solono County. It was their hope to go to Ross, the Russian settlement on the coast at Tomales Bay, and ascertain the intentions of the Russian government, in their having created a settlement on lands that the Spanish considered as theirs. When their efforts were thwarted by the Straits, they proceeding along side of Mt. Diable on over towards the Santa Clara Valley and back to Monterey.
